WELCOME TO THE ROCKIES & THE 2018 DENVER GEM SHOW
ARTIFACTUAL AND LEE DOWNEY STUDIO - BOOTH 5 THE COLORADO MINERAL AND FOSSIL FALL SHOW
We have been showing at the Denver gem and mineral shows for over 25 years at various locations and this year its an entirely fresh show.
We are pleased to be part of this new venture in a new part of town, with new promoters at a top notch facility. Seems to be a positive direction for Denver, hoping for the best!
Artifactual was started in the late 1970’s by Lee Downey, an aspiring jeweler based in Arizona then later in the San Francisco bay area. Primarily doing silver and lapidary, the focus shifted to sculpture after meeting with a gifted ivory carver and his family in Bali, Indonesia.
Collaborating with these amazing Balinese ivory carvers was a perfect fit since we already were working with rare fossil ivories of walrus, mammoth and mastodon from Alaska.
And the artists in this Balinese village were mostly carving bone and coconut shell since the supply of legal ivory had by then dried up.
From the first small carvings in June 1984... ancient walrus teeth turned into animal figurines….to the wide variety of materials we are sculpting now in Bali, it has been a continuous unbroken venture with the same family of carvers. 33 years on and going strong, its been a constant pleasure to keep the passion for our work, the inspiration for our art and the love of the natural treasures our earth has shared with all of us.
